Media get it wrong regarding Romney and religion
Good article today from the Pepperdine Graphic on the media’s misperception of Romney. Despite rock star credentials, some media outlets seem bent on highlighting the differences between Mormonism and other Christian churches as a way of discrediting Romney. Romney is top in academics, top in business, top in non-profit work, and top in politics. Not bad. Oh, and by the way— he’s a Mormon. What’s the big deal about Romney’s religion? What some media outlets call a cult is the same Christian religion to which many business leaders and politicians belong. Funny how these same media...

The Church has recently launched a web site to coordinate its efforts with the tech community. Tom Welch was hired to be the manager of this tech community, which can offer feedback and suggestions on Church technology initiatives. There is also a live forum on the site, the first ever forum on a Church website. Church technology employees also held “tech talks” in Salt Lake City and Provo recently to explain how the Church uses technology and to meet members in the tech community. Read MoreWhy Question Mormon Leadership?
The Dallas Morning News printed a few letters to the editor raising concerns about the many recent news stories about Mitt Romney’s mormonism and its potential impact on his run for the presidential office. The letters note the imbalance in the media when focusing on Romney’s religion (or Senator Reid, for that matter) when members of other faiths have not received similar scrutiny. The media hype and alleged concern that many have for a politician’s mormon faith shows nothing more than the ignorance most people have regarding LDS doctrine and the historical evidence which suggests that...
Read MoreUSAToday says no need to fear a Mormon
USA Today has a good article on Mitt Romney and the Church, saying there’s no need to fear a Mormon presidential candidate. The article suggests that Romney quickly make a public statement, in a large venue, to quell any fears that he would answer to Salt Lake City or that his Mormonism would affect his Presidency. Harry Reid’s ignoring the Mormon church’s pleas for a federal marriage amendment can serve to calm any public sentiment that Mormons walk in lock step with their church. The article also refutes some of the concerns in recent articles of Slate and The New Republic. [W]e...
Read More‘The Mormons’ on PBS takes aim at stereotypes
Award-winning filmmaker Helen Whitney has one over-arching goal for her four-hour production “The Mormons,” which airs this spring on PBS. “I hope that most of the stereotypes — ideally, all of them — will be blown away,” she told the Deseret Morning News on Saturday. “Because so many of them are just based on ignorance. Ignorance about Mormon history, ignorance about Mormon theology. Ignorance.” The two-part, four-hour documentary, a presentation of both “American Experience” and “Frontline” — their first co-production — is to air nationally on April 30 and May...

Read MoreA Modern Prophet Goes Global
The Economist is running a story titled “A modern prophet goes global” about the LDS Church’s international expansion. While mostly accurate and worthy of the reader’s attention, a couple parts are on shaky ground. One such example: Douglas Davies, a professor at Britain’s Durham University, says the Latter-day Saints are too centralised to be a “world religion” in the full sense: only if different continents and cultures develop their own styles of Mormon worship can the religion be likened to universal ones like Buddhism or Islam. While interesting to see this person’s...
