No Place for Polygamy in Mormon Church

Ashlie Rasmussen of Falls Church, Virginia, wrote an excellent letter to the editor for the Washington Post, titled “No Place for Polygamy in Mormon Church”. The letter is in response to the Post’s article titled “Polygamists Fight to Be Seen as Part of Mainstream Society”, which LDS News Watch previously reported about. The text of the letter is as follows: The Nov. 21 front-page article “Polygamists Fight to Be Seen as Part of Mainstream Society” asserted that “the politically powerful Mormon Church, while officially opposing polygamy, did not want the bad press strict...

Polygamists Fight to Be Seen As Part of Mainstream Society

The Washington Post published an article last week titled “Polygamists Fight to Be Seen As Part of Mainstream Society”. Like many articles dealing with polygamy, this one seemingly obfuscates the distinction between religious organizations that practice polygamy and the LDS Church, which does not. The Church does not practice polygamy, and members of the Church found to be in this situation are excommunicated. In the article the author takes an authoritative stance, claiming to know the reasons why the Church renounced polygamy in 1890. As a related example: One reason [for the so-called...

Some Southern Republicans don’t consider Mormons Christians, but it may not matter

MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson contends that some Southern Republicans consider Mormonism a cult instead of a brand of Christianity. Mormons insist they are indeed Christians, worshipping the God of the Old and New Testaments. Michael Graham replied that it may not matter anyway: The last time I checked, evangelicals didn’t consider Judaism a form of Christianity either, and yet Joe Lieberman is wildly popular and is probably the most popular Democrat among Southern Republicans. In the modern era, it is not one religion versus another. Source: MediaMatters.org (includes video) Bookmark on...

Many voters say they would never vote for Mormon president

On November 20, The Salt Lake Tribune posted an article titled “Many voters say they would never vote for Mormon president”. From the article: Some 43 percent of Americans wouldn’t even consider voting for a Mormon for president, according to a new poll that shows an increase from previous surveys in the number of voters unwilling to support an LDS candidate for the White House. In a Public Forum Letter submitted to the paper, Ted Evans from Salt Lake City issued the following statement about the misleading article: The recent article, “Many voters say they would never vote for...

Reader Poses Question About Mormon Religious Beliefs – Lee Thompson Goes Overboard with the Answers

An honestly enquiring Christian asks why Mormons don’t worship the cross. Writer Lee Thompson, a non-Mormon, goes overboard in the answer section of this article from the Journal Gazette located in Charleston, Ill. Mr. Thompson says that ”Mormons never use crosses anywhere, perhaps because Mormons believe Jesus’ death on the cross is insufficient to obtain eternal salvation.” Perhaps the Journal Gazette should consider asking a Mormon to answer questions about the LDS Church. Publisher/Editor: Carl Walworth e-mail: cwalworth@jg-tc.com Write Lee Thompson at “Dear Lee” at...

Welcome to LDSNewsWatch

For about a year now, I have been collecting and tracking news articles about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (AKA the Mormon Church). I use various online resources to find and track these articles. Over the last year, I have found some very interesting things. As you can imagine, there have been plenty of articles on polygamy and in those articles there’s been plenty of intermingling of the LDS Church and various polygamist sects, which causes confusion. One headline read: “Mormon Leader Arrested on Child Sex Charges” and “Mormon Prophet Told Followers He’d Never...
